The Seas It Story
On July 18, 2004, at the age of 30, Todd McGovern was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. With no explanation, the doctors stated that he had been dealt a tough hand and that he had six months to two years to live.
A former two-sport college athlete, Todd was shocked when he was told he would be joining the millions of Americans afflicted with cancer. As a newlywed of two months, Todd faced the ultimate decision: die a little each day, or live a little each day. He chose to Seas It.
Founded by Todd’s wife Amanda C. McGovern, Seas It is a nonprofit organization that promotes cancer recovery through recreation. Cancer is a disease that at times makes its sufferers feel powerless. Seas It aims to help patients regain control over their lives so that they may fight the battle against cancer on their own terms.
Like many other cancer patients, Todd was unprepared for the challenges that lay ahead. Understanding that they could control only those things that were controllable, Todd and Amanda have committed themselves to pursuing recreational activities in order to lift their spirits and help keep them as healthy as possible.
Throughout his recovery, Todd has maintained an active lifestyle in tandem with his medical treatments. The physical activity has provided a positive distraction from the grind of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. More importantly, it has enabled him to maintain a quality of life more commonly associated with non-cancer patients.
Many doctors and patients believe that a positive attitude and an active lifestyle can aid in the cancer recovery process. It is with this in mind that Seas It will work to provide cancer patients and their families with the means to participate in recreational activities. In addition to offering individualized recreational programs and services, Seas It will focus on educating the public about the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle in the fight against cancer as well as in its prevention.
